Year-End Money Moves for Your Cash, Credit, and Retirement
3 Easy Year-End Money Moves for Your Cash, Credit, and Retirement
You don’t need a perfect year or a six-figure salary to make real progress with your money. You need a few aligned moves that actually change your stress levels, your options, and your future.
These year end money moves are the same three I look at every December to help myself and my clients become work-optional sooner instead of working forever.
I’m also sharing these after navigating a recent ER visit alone and uninsured as a queer, nonbinary, single person estranged from family. It was scary. And it also showed me how much the wealth I’ve built changed my ability to advocate for myself under pressure.
Here’s where to focus.
1. Move Your Cash Into a High-Yield Savings Account
If your money is sitting in checking or a low-interest savings account, it’s losing power every day.
A high-yield savings account helps your cash:
- Earn real interest
- Stay accessible
- Support your nervous system with actual financial safety
This is the easiest place to start—and the fastest way to upgrade your foundation.
2. Use Credit With Intention, Not Shame
Credit isn’t a moral issue. It’s a tool.
At the end of the year, check:
- Your credit score
- Your balances
- Your APR (what you’re paying to borrow)
From there, you can start using credit cards for:
- Cash back
- Bonus intro offers
- Long-term score growth
The goal is to stop leaking money through avoidance and start using credit to your advantage.
3. Check In on Your Retirement Accounts
You don’t need to “max everything out” to start. You do need clarity.
Ask yourself:
- Do I have a 401(k), Roth IRA, or IRA?
- Do I know what it’s invested in?
- Am I contributing consistently?
These questions alone can shift your entire long-term trajectory.
