Business Finances for Entrepreneurs: 4 Ways to Build Wealth

Business finances for entrepreneurs are about more than making enough money to pay your bills. A profitable business doesn’t automatically make you a wealthy business owner. Your business can also help you build personal wealth, create more freedom, and fund your early retirement.

You can have clients coming in, pay your bills every month, and have money sitting in your business bank account while still wondering: Am I actually doing the right things with my money?

Your business shouldn’t just pay your bills. It can help you build personal wealth, create more freedom, and fund your retirement.

And before you assume you need another client, launch, or offer to make that happen, look at the money your business is already making.

Here are four areas I want every business owner to think about.

1. Business Finances for Entrepreneurs Start With Tracking Revenue

First question: Do you actually know how much your business is making?

Not approximately. Not “I think I had a pretty good month.”

How much revenue have you generated this month? This quarter? This year?

Tracking your revenue helps you understand which offers are actually making you money, how much your business can afford to spend, and how much you can reasonably pay yourself.

You can’t optimize money you aren’t tracking.

And remember: business revenue is not the same thing as personal wealth.

Making more money is great. Knowing what to do with that money once it comes in is what helps turn a profitable business into wealth for the person who owns it.

2. Use Business Credit Cards to Earn Points, Cash Back and Bonuses

If you’re already spending money to run your business, I want you to ask:

What else can this dollar do for me?

Business expenses can potentially earn credit card points, cash back, travel rewards, and welcome bonuses when you’re using credit strategically.

For example, I recently planned to make a $5,000 investment in business coaching.

Instead of only thinking about the $5,000 leaving my business, I looked at how I could optimize an expense I was already going to make. By putting the purchase toward a qualifying business credit card bonus, I could earn $500 back.

That’s 10% of the $5,000 purchase.

The point isn’t to spend money you weren’t already planning to spend just to chase rewards.

The point is to stop leaving potential value on the table when your business is already spending money anyway.

3. Make Your Business Cash Work Harder

Take a look at your business bank accounts.

How much cash is sitting there?

And more importantly: what is that cash earning you?

We talk all the time about moving personal savings out of low-interest accounts and into high-yield savings accounts. Business owners should be thinking critically about idle business cash, too.

One of my clients went from earning pennies in interest to around $100 per month after optimizing where her cash was sitting. Biz owner email topics (1)

You worked hard to earn that money.

Don’t automatically assume the only way to make your business more profitable is to go find another client. Sometimes there’s money to optimize inside the business you already have.

4. Use Your Business to Build Personal Wealth and Retirement

This is the big one.

Is your business funding current you AND future you?

It’s easy to get caught in the cycle of:

Make money → pay business expenses → pay yourself → pay personal bills → repeat.

But building a business can also mean building an engine for your personal wealth.

That means thinking about your personal investments, retirement contributions, and the retirement-account options available to business owners.

Your goal doesn’t have to be to work harder and harder every year so your business keeps getting bigger.

Your business can help you build enough personal wealth that eventually you don’t have to work as much as you do today.

That’s a very different definition of business success.

Business Finances for Entrepreneurs Should Build Wealth

When I teach business finances for entrepreneurs, I look at the entire ecosystem:

Revenue → rewards → cash growth → retirement.

I want my business spending working for me.

I want my cash working for me.

I want my investments working for me.

And ultimately, I want the business I’ve built to give me more freedom, not simply another job I have to maintain forever.

So ask yourself:

Is my business just paying my bills, or is it actually building my wealth?

You may not need a bigger business to start building more wealth.

You may need to use the business you already have more strategically.
