Resting is Investing (with Jannese Torres)

My friend Jannese Torres recently joined me on my podcast and we had an enlightening conversation about how resting is investing.

Jannese is the host of the Yo Quiero Dinero Podcast and runs a successful business with a six figure passive income stream.

We met via the IG Latinx personal finance universe a few years ago. She’s been an inspiration and mentor as I’ve worked to launch my business and blog through her blogging boot camp.

We were chatting about the importance of rest. A topic often overlooked in our Latinx / immigrant culture. Working hard is the default and we tend to tie our personal worth into monetary success.

I asked Jannese:

What is your relationship with resting and how is resting investing as a business owner?

Oh gosh. I love this question. First off, I think it’s important to realize that like if you don’t know how to rest, it’s probably because you didn’t have that modeled at home. And I know for a lot of us, like we just didn’t see that growing up.

You know, Saturday mornings it was like the fricking salsa music was on by like 8:00 AM in the morning. The shit was blasting and it was like, okay, it’s time to clean the house. So for the longest time I had a really hard time taking naps. I literally could not take naps. I would lay in bed and be thinking about all the shit that I had to do.

And by that time, like an hour or two went by the time that I was supposed to be taking a nap. And I had just worked myself into a ball of anxiety of all that I had to do. And I really had to sit back and think about like, why am I like this? And it’s cuz my mom and my grandmother and everybody else who came before me, they literally do not know how to sit still.

I didn’t know how to rest. And so I had to learn, I had to teach myself how productive rest can be. Because I will be the type of person that if I’m not conscious of it, I will work myself into the ground and I’m done with that.

I don’t do that anymore. I do quarterly solo retreats where I am just chilling on the beach absorbing the good vibes of of nature and the ocean.
I take the whole month of December off and I tell my team to do the same because it’s like, look, I don’t have a boss. I have to set these boundaries. I have to be the one to enforce PTO policies on myself because otherwise I’ll be working forever.

And I think one of the things that I think a lot of business owners especially make the mistake of is creating businesses that require them to show up for every single dollar, and I am the complete opposite.

I need to make enough passive income so that I can only show up if and when I want to for anything. And so by creating a six figure passive income source through my food blog, I can literally just chill. All my bills are being paid every month, and I can selectively work on the things that I care about.

So if I want to have a launch of my program, I can do that. If I want to sit by the beach and take the whole month off, I’m going to do that.
We have to normalize this idea that we can create income streams that allow us to have options. I’m super passionate about helping entrepreneurs create passive income that’s going to allow them to take time off whenever they want.”

I relate to everything Jannese said. It’s hard to shift your mindset about rest and think about it as something positive that will help you in the long run. We live in a capitalist society that makes you feel like time is a constraint; time is money. Spending time resting doesn’t seem like investing.

But if you invest in rest, you can give yourself more options. It is tough to think about the future when you are stressed about money 24/7. Your mindset changes when you are no longer burnt out and tired all the time. You gain clarity. Then, you can take yourself out of the day to day hamster wheel. You’re able to think about your future and what steps you can take to create a life you want. If you’re ready to embody your future millionaire self, book a call with me.
