Healing from inflammation and weight loss as a ’90s trans kid

TW: Eating disorders

Just finished a month of personal training! I’m so proud of myself for picking myself up through the worst health crisis of my life, horrible insomnia, and overcoming grief of rehoming Luna and I’m feeling more energetic. I lost 15 lbs of inflammation when I started eating healthier and I barely recognized myself in the mirror. I looked and felt weak.

If you haven’t listened to my wellness story, listen on the Wellthy Generation podcast.

I’m so glad I decided to become a gym person again after normally enjoying biking and running outside. Since I couldn’t go out to eat or drink as much, I used that money to invest in personal training to improve my strength and posture. I thought that getting top surgery in 2017 would fix my posture, but it didn’t.

I will always prefer cardio over strength training, but I’m glad I’m prioritizing what it actually needs vs what I want. I’ve done a lot of work on accepting my body as it is, which I never thought I’d have to do again after growing up with eating disorders and gender dysphoria (the dysphoria is still there, but I def feel more euphoria since top surgery).

I had no idea how triggering it would be to lose weight, but it was, because as a teen I struggled so much with my weight that I stopped having my period because I’d run so much and would go to bed hungry. It was weird to lose weight this time without wanting to, when that was all my teen self wanted and I’d beat myself up about it. I grew up with a freaking scale in our dining room and my dad would weigh me. He told me my belly was too big for a 12 year old girl. I’ll never forget that.

Growing up as a 90s kid, where stars like Kate Winslet we’re mocked for being fat (as if it were a bad thing) didn’t help at all. I’m so glad there’s more media representation of diverse bodies and more trans representation so that kids actually see themselves reflected on the screen when they have no one physically around like them.

Part of me wanted to get back to my original weight at the start of this year, but I’ve decided to just accept my body as it was. I had this fake idea that I was “stronger” before but I was full of inflammation. So, I’m working on accepting my body at my current weight now.

So happy I’m feeling better. Your health really is your #1 investment.

Healing from chronic illness thanks to weight training.
