My First Temazcal was INTENSE

My first temazcal (prehispanic sweat lodge) was a WILD experience. I did it during a cacao festival at Terra Noble in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I’d only heard people who’d done it say that it’s “relaxing” and that you “sweat a lot” but noppppe not for me!

First there were about 20 of us who ducked our heads and moved in a circle to sit down. Some were on the outer edge, and the really brave ones sat on the inside around a circular pit for the flaming hot rocks without a barrier or anything 👀

I do NOT like sitting on the floor. I don’t like sitting crisscross. I like to sit in chairs. It was uncomfortable from the start. Then, they put the burning hot rocks into the pit and started singing ceremonial songs. Our guide started speaking to us, and then they CLOSED the door.

My First Temazcal at Terra Noble in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

I’m not one to feel claustrophobic, but being encerrado in a pitch black dark, hot room with a bunch of strangers freaked me the f OUT. I started to have a panic attack and tried to suppress it because I’m good at that. I don’t like admitting defeat or asking for help. It got to a point where I could barely breathe and I said I needed to leave.
Voices around me said “fuerza” and to breathe, and that we couldn’t leave because the door closed (even though two people did end up leaving halfway through).

Suddenly, an unknown hand reached out and grabbed mine. I IMMEDIATELY felt better. That was all I needed. I started breathing deeply and realized that this was going to be like a psychedelic experience. It wouldn’t last forever, but just like a bad trip, I had to remember that it was impermanent. And I was surrounded by strong people who had done it before.

I was told to sing along to the songs, even if I didn’t know them. That helped distract me from the heat, as every 20 minutes or so, they introduced MORE hot rocks and it got progressively hotter. Two people left, and I thought about it, but I decided to stay because I realized it was possible.

THIS reminds me of how I guide my money coaching clients. They come to me feeling scared and guilty about not knowing how to invest their money, and I literally grab their hand and wall them through their wealth building journeys. They see me, a financially independent, trans traveler who has never made more than $45k, travel solo to 34 countries, build community wherever I am, twerk my way to creating queer art meetups and share my money gems with the world, and they realize it’s possible for them to be themselves and build generational wealth. I just walked a client through calling their old 401(k) provider to make sure their $5k would be rolled over to their IRA. We called multiple times and we’re hung up on, spoke to customer service reps that weren’t helpful, and then others who were.

My client breathed a sigh of relief because I was there, walking her through this entire, daunting process. I love being my clients’ cheerleader and financial translator and helping them understand how to make money moves that align with their futures. That’s the magic I bring to the world!
